Michael Kelly Gilbert

Michael Kelly Gilbert, 57, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, peacefully passed away on August 28, 2024. Born on May 23, 1967, in Wichita County, Texas, Michael's warmth and infectious humor left a lasting impact on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Michael graduated from Oak Hill High School in 1985, and soon after, he committed himself to serve his country by joining the Army in 1986. He proudly achieved the rank of Specialist during his seven years of service, during which he was stationed in Ansbach, Germany, Ft. Polk, Louisiana, and Ft. Hood, Texas. His dedication to duty was a testament to his character, further illustrating the good man that he was.

Michael was known for his cheerful demeanor; he was always smiling, laughing, and delighting those around him with jokes. He took immense pride in his role as a Poppy, cherishing every moment spent with his beloved children and grandchildren. They were the center of his universe, and he delighted in their laughter, accomplishments, and joy.

Michael leaves behind the love of his life, Carrie Gilbert. He is also survived by his daughters, Cyrstal (Ian) Sopian of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Charlotte Gilbert of Little Rock, Arkansas. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Jason Michael Vernon, Theodore Sopian, and Carrie Sopian. He is further survived by his sister, Mary (William) Asmus of Mabelvale, Arkansas; and his brothers, David (Cissy) Horne of Columbus, Georgia, Alan Horne of Bridgeport, Texas, Mark Gilbert of Talladega, Alabama, William Gilbert of Bryant, Arkansas, and James (Rita) Gilbert of Boyce, Louisiana; as well as numerous wonderful cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, James Gilbert and Lois (Burroughs) Horne, and his stepfather, David Horne, Sr.

To celebrate and honor Michael's life, and the impact he had on everyone he met, visitation will start at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, with a service immediately following at 10:00 a.m., at Smith Benton Funeral Home, 322 N. Dianne Swaim will officiate both the service at the funeral home, as well as the committal at the cemetery.

Michael Kelly Gilbert will be profoundly missed but remembered fondly for his vibrant spirit, love for his family, dedication to his country, and the laughter he brought into the lives of those around him. He may have left this earth, but he will never leave our hearts.
