Rachel J. Roebuck

Listen to Obituary

Rachel J. Thompson Roebuck, born December 13, 1930, in Union Valley, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026. She lived a life marked by dedication, resilience, and unwavering faith, leaving behind a legacy cherished by those who knew and loved her. She was one of ten siblings, a large and close-knit family that shaped much of her early life.

Throughout her lifetime, Rachel demonstrated remarkable versatility in her professional endeavors. Notably, during the 1940s, she contributed significantly to the war effort by working in soldering and maintenance on aircraft for General Dynamics. At a time when women were called upon to fill crucial roles, she was instrumental in accessing and repairing the hard-to-reach spaces of military aircraft, a vital contribution to World War II efforts. Her mechanical aptitude was evident not only in her work but in her everyday life; she had a natural ability to figure things out and fix what needed fixing.

After graduating from high school, Rachel worked in the Middleton family cafe, where she first met James Washington Lee Middleton, Jr. Although their connection was not immediate, his humor and charming songs eventually won her heart. Together they raised their children in a marriage graced with love and partnership until his passing. Later in life, Rachel found joy once more with her second husband, Clyde H. Roebuck. They met at church, and their connection was immediate and grounded in their shared faith. After knowing one another for only six months, they were married, beginning a relationship marked by deep companionship, mutual respect, and steady happiness. Clyde was a good man who cared for Rachel well, and together they shared a life filled with laughter, devotion, and the comfort of simply being together.

Rachel was much more than her work and marriages. She was an amazing mother and a woman of profound faith whose spirituality touched every aspect of her life. She was known for being a very good cook and took pride in doing things well. She also enjoyed gardening and was a skilled seamstress, having even worked in upholstery sewing at one point—testament to her patience and creativity.

Her family was her pride and joy. She is survived by her daughters Sheila Pennock (Daniel) and Diana Scribner (Harvey), who carry forward her legacy of love and strength. She leaves behind beloved grandchildren: Christopher Washington Pennock, Nathaniel Lee Pennock, Enrique Scribner, Joanna Lewis (Brandon), Lydia Nevels, Debbie Scribner, Cecilia Wise (Adam), and Michael Scribner. Her great-grandchildren—Killyan Anthony Lee Pennock, Gregory Lewis, Michael Wise, Brantley Wise, Joanne Lewis, Ashton Green, Colton Wise, Julia Ruth, Faith Whitfield, Lamour Lewis, Desmond Lewis, and Jamison Green—stand as a living testament to the enduring impact of her life. Additionally, a host of nieces, nephews, and close family and friends will deeply miss her warmth and wisdom.

Rachel’s journey was marked by both joy and sorrow. She was preceded in death by her first husband, James Washington Lee Middleton, Jr.; her second husband, Clyde H. Roebuck; her son, James Clarence Middleton; her grandson, Victor Scribner; and all nine of her siblings..

Her life will be honored with services held on Monday, May 11, 2026, beginning with visitation from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 1:00 p.m., both at Highway Church of Christ, 18514 I-30, Benton, Arkansas.
