Richard Meriweather

Listen to Obituary

On January 24, 1947, Richard Lee Meriweather, of Conway, Arkansas, was born to John Leroy and Martha (Meriweather) Starkey. On August 29, 2025, at the age of 78, Richard entered the presence of his Lord and Savior.

Richard was a hardworking man of deep integrity, quiet generosity, and unwavering faith. He inspired those around him to live with the same strength of character and purpose. At just 19 years old, he began his career with the United States Postal Service. Through dedication and perseverance, he rose to become the Postmaster of Conway, retiring in 1992.

But retirement did not slow him down. Richard went on to build a second career in construction, developing neighborhoods and building many homes throughout Conway—literally shaping the community he loved so much.

He found joy in the simple things and loved sharing them with others. A talented musician, Richard could often be found strumming his guitar and singing old country tunes or gospel hymns. He was an avid Razorback fan, a casual (but competitive) golfer, and a proud gardener—often gifting friends and family with tomatoes from his vine or golf balls he’d rescued from ponds.

Above all, Richard lived a life of love—love for his family, his friends, and most of all, for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. A faithful member of Central Baptist Church, he was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a deeply cherished “Paw-Paw” to his grandchildren.

In his final moments, Richard was surrounded by his family—just as he would have wanted—offering words of encouragement and one final reminder to love and serve the Lord.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, John Leroy and Martha (Meriweather) Starkey; and his stepfather, Thomas Hulen Starkey.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Ruby Meriweather; three sons: James Meriweather (Tracy), John Meriweather (Holly), and Jeff Meriweather (Dena); three siblings: Patricia Smith, Maryjane Hawley (Michael), and David Starkey (Sherry); seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many extended family members who were deeply loved.

A celebration of his life will be at 11:00 am, on Thursday, September 4, 2025 at Smith Family Funeral Home Conway Chapel with a Visitation preceding the service at 10:00 am.
