Richard Vernon Newton, 91, of Hot Springs, Arkansas, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2026. He was born on July 6, 1934, to Charles Bailey Newton and Flora Louise Thompson.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Margaret Wells and Margie Slaton; his brothers, Charles B. Newton and Wayne Moore Newton; and his son, Richard Vernon Newton, Jr.

He is survived by his sisters, Suzanne Newton Rusgis and Bettye Sue Newton Eshenroder; his children, Steven Louis Newton (Colleen) and Deborah Louise Heiman (Mike); his daughter-in-law, Robyn Newton; as well as 11 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren who will carry on his legacy.

Richard married Margaret Gwendolyn Wells during their high school years, and together they built a family. Later in life, he married Margie Slaton.

Throughout his life, Richard was known for his deep love of the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was an avid golfer, participating in many tournaments over the years. He was also a proud member of the Moose Club, where he devoted time to community service and fellowship.

Richard served his community with distinction as a firefighter for the Little Rock Fire Department, where he rose to the rank of Captain. During his career, he made a lasting impact by introducing scuba diving to the department’s search and rescue operations, bringing closure and comfort to many families.

After retiring from the fire department, he continued working alongside his brother Wayne, helping build hotels across Arkansas.

Known for his generous and compassionate spirit, Richard was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, whether friend or stranger. Later in life, he built a home on Lake Hamilton, where he cherished time with family, enjoyed fishing, and appreciated the peace of the water.

A funeral service will be held on June 29, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Smith Family Funeral Home, located at 2205 Airport Road, Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Richard will be remembered for his service, his kindness, and the love he had for his family and community.
