Robert Earl Mitchell, affectionately known as "Mitch," was born on January 18, 1955, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He passed away on June 16, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, humor, and devotion to his family and friends.
After graduating from Lynnwood High in California in 1973, Mitch immediately enlisted in the Army, proudly serving from 1973 to 1977. His dedication to his country was recognized with the National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. After his military service, he transitioned to a career as a truck driver, where he was contracted by various companies that appreciated his reliable services. Following a work-related injury, he then pivoted and for many years ran a successful small engine repair shop right in his backyard. His knack for fixing things extended not only to engines but also to life; he was a man who loved to tinker and solve puzzles, often finding joy in assembling large puzzles of his favorite bands, which he would then frame and display with pride.
Mitch had a habit of always taking the scenic route, no matter where he was going. While it often meant longer drives and drove his kids a little crazy, it was just part of who he was. He cherished the journey as much as the destination. One of his proudest chapters in life was supporting his son Matthew’s love for dirt biking. They even built a dirt bike track right in their yard, a project that brought in neighborhood kids and created countless memories. Mitch took Matt to races all over Arkansas, and even though money was tight during those years, it meant the world to him to make that possible. He was deeply proud to have shared those moments.
Mitch was a vibrant personality who radiated joy and laughter. With an infectious sense of humor, he was known to joke at the most unexpected times, always striving to bring a smile to those around him. His love for music, particularly for Pink Floyd, was legendary. He cherished attending tribute concerts adorned with spectacular light shows, often sharing these unforgettable experiences with his daughter. As a devoted father, he was always ready to lend a helping hand to his children, placing their needs above his own, embodying the spirit of selflessness and care.
In addition to his many roles, Mitch was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting but found his true passion in fishing. His culinary skills were equally impressive, excelling in smoking, grilling, and baking delightful meals infused with love, which created cherished memories for all who gathered to enjoy them.
Mitch held a quiet but personal faith throughout his life. When his mother could no longer drive, he began taking her wherever she needed to go, including to the Church of Christ in Benton. Through those regular visits, he developed a deeper connection to the church and was eventually baptized there.
He is survived by his beloved children, Jodi Sheppard (Shane) and Matthew Mitchell (Jasmine Richard), as well as his treasured grandchildren, Cloie Mitchell, Tinley Jo Sheppard, and Nash Sheppard. He also leaves behind his adopted sister, Paula Rogers, along with many close friends and family who will miss him dearly.
Mitch’s parents, Gerald Wilburn and Bertie Mae Mitchell, along with his beloved grandmothers, Frieda Stuckey and Ethel Mitchell, preceded him in death.
To honor Robert’s life, a visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 24th at 3:00 p.m. at Celebration Baptist Church, located at 4601 Hwy 229, Haskell, AR 72015. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow at 4:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
Robert Earl Mitchell will be remembered not only for his accomplishments and hobbies but for his larger-than-life personality and the abiding love he shared with everyone fortunate enough to know him.
