Roy Glen Wood Sr, age 83, of Hot Springs, passed away Saturday, February 9, 2013, at
Mercy Hospital in Hot Springs. He was born October 3, 1929, in Arkadelphia, Ark.,
to Andrew and Sutah (Bell) Wood and was one of seven children.
Roy was raised in Gum Springs and graduated from Arkadelphia High School.
Like all of his siblings, he grew up working on the family farm and learned the
meaning of a hard day's work which he carried throughout his life.
On June 16, 1950, he married Vollie Mae (Frazier) Wood in Okolona and they moved
to Camden, Arkansas, where he was employed by International Paper Company,
Davis Manufacturing, and the Bag Pac Division of IPCO. He retired from
International Paper in 1991 after twenty-two years of service. He spent his entire
career in Camden and was a machinist-welder by trade. He was member of the UA
Local Union 706 and served in the Arkansas National Guard. Roy and Vollie raised
their two children in Camden where they attended Fairview Methodist Church and
Vollie enjoyed a career as a teacher in the Camden Fairview School System. In his
later years, he was involved in the Food Pantry Ministry of the church. Due to
declining health, he moved to Hot Springs in 2008 to be near his children.
Roy was an avid outdoorsman and spent many days on the Ouachita River, White
Oak Lake, and in the deer woods of South Arkansas. He enjoyed lending a helping
hand to neighbors and friends and was a kind, gentle man. Roy had a deep sense of
love and devotion to his family. A man of few words, his generous nature and good
deeds spoke volumes about how he felt about others.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of fifty-three years, Vollie: his parents; his
brothers, Jack, Tom, Carroll, and Marvin; and sisters, Midge and Emma Catherine.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Roy, Jr. and Lisa Wood and his
daughter and son-in-law, Becky and John Smalling, all of Hot Springs; his four
grandsons Clark (Kelsey) Smalling of Hot Springs, Brad (Anelee) Martin of
Singapore, Bailey (Brittany) Smalling of Alexander, and Grant Wood of Hot Springs;
two granddaughters, Brittany (Phillip) Wright of Stamps and Brooke Bailey of
Kings Bay, Georgia; four great-grandchildren, Josie, Cash, Eden, and Anna Kate; a
brother-in-law, Orlan Ehler of Iowa; two sister-in-laws, Pat Wood of Ohio and Ingrid
Wilmott of Texas; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, February 12, at Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral
Home in Arkadelphia.
Services are 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 13, at the funeral home chapel.
Burial will be in the Richland Cemetery, southwest of Arkadelphia.
