“A Time to be Born”

Thelma Stovall, affectionately known as “Granny” was born June 15, 1944, the fifth of eight children to Hilton and Mattie Chandler, in Cotton Plant, AR. She departed this life on January 4, 2023.

“A Time to Live”

 After graduating from Cotton Plant High Thelma furthered her education by obtaining a bachelor’s degree from Philander Smith College and a Master’s degree from the University of Central Arkansas. Thelma was a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority. She was employed as a Librarian and spent a number of years employed with Cotton Plant School District, Holly Grove School District.  Thelma later returning to Cotton Plant School District until she retired. Thelma accepted Christ at an early age at Ash Grove Missionary Baptist Church. After high school she left Cotton Plant to attend College.  Following college, she got married and to this union one daughter was born.  Upon returning to Cotton Plant, she joined Trice Chapel MB Church.   Thelma was an active member and enjoyed teaching Sunday School, ushering and serving as the Church Clerk until her health started to fail.  In this last season of her life she moved to Scott, AR. to live with her daughter.

“A Time to Die”

Thelma is preceded in death by her parents, Hilton and Mattie Chandler and three siblings- Gloria Arbor, Hilton Chandler Jr. and Shirley Neal. She is survived by her Beloved daughter Marcia (Calvin) Dean of Scott, AR , her grand-children –Terrance (Ashley) Chapple of Maumelle AR, Whitney Chapple and Chandler Dean both of Scott, AR, Courtney and Carissa Dean, both of Milwaukee, WI., Mario Brister of Little Rock, AR, 8 great-grandchildren, one special Great- Grand child Quinn Chapple “Bre” as she calls her, one brother James (Gwen) Chandler of Silver Springs MD, three sisters – Lenora White of Los Angeles, CA, Vaness Crenshaw of Phoenix, AZ, Vernice Rodgers of Milwaukee, WI, Ruth Chandler, Sister-In-Law of Little Rock, AR and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, followed by the funeral at 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 14, 2023 at Smith North Little Rock Funeral Home, 1921 Main St., North Little Rock, AR  72114.  Interment will follow at Arkansas Memorial Gardens, 8507 Hwy 161, North Little Rock, AR.  Jailon Bullock, Gerald McCall, Mario Brister, John May, Darryl Arbor and Billy Dixon will serve as pallbearers.
