TSgt Thompson

TSgt Betty Joe Thompson, born 18 Oct. 1941, at Moro, Arkansas walked through the gates of Heaven July 16, 2017 to be with God and those who preceded her: Husband CCMsgt Larry E. Thompson, father Charlie E. Lindsey, mother Doris E. Long Lindsey, son Charles A. Phillips, brother Billy Ray Lindsey, sister Belua Jean Lindsey, grandfather Auther D. Long, grandmother Cassie E. Long, grandfather William Lindsey, grandmother Douglas Lindsey Darby and grandfather Fred Darby.

She is survived by her son, Randy A. (Karen) Phillips; daughters MaryAnne (Jim) Malashetivz and Sharon R. (Mike) Wiggins; brother Charles E. Lindsey; daughters Pamela L. (Robbin) Middleton and Cheryl L. (Noel) Schauf; brother-in-law John (Sonya) Thompson; and sister-in-law Jo Ann (Karl) Thompson. Betty also leaves behind 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and the love of God.

Betty married the love of her life in June of 1973; they were inseparable. Betty joined the 189th Air National Guard at the age of 34 to work alongside Larry. No one thought she would make it through Basic Training because of her age. She said the roughest part was having a 19-year old training instructor up in her face. Her career spanned Civil Engineering, Personnel and then Operations where she and Larry worked until retirement; Betty with 23 years and Larry with 37 years. They were proud to serve their country. Betty and Larry were tireless advocates for the Non-commissioned Officers Association. They loved the people of the 189th ANG and they were a second family.

Betty was also an avid gardener. Her love for gardening showed in the beauty of all her plants that she willingly shared, along with advice on their care. She was also an excellent southern cook, whether for one or a hundred. Everyone enjoyed her cooking.

Whether she was called Sarg, BJ, Betty or Big Mama (grandma), she endeared herself to all. She loved and cherished her family and friends.

Family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Smith-Westbrook Funeral Home, Beebe. Funeral will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 20, 2017, at Smith-Westbrook Funeral Home, with entombment in Meadowbrook Mausoleum.
