Valerian John Podraza, a master carpenter and proud veteran of the United States Army, passed away on June 22, 2025, in Benton, Arkansas. Born on August 25, 1934, in Lincoln, Nebraska, Valerian dedicated his life to his family, his craft, and his community.

A seasoned professional in the commercial roofing business, Valerian's skills extended far beyond the workplace. He was known for his remarkable ability to construct a myriad of items, from functional cabinets and charming chicken coops to extraordinary pirate ships complete with gangplanks. His creations were not just built; they were manifestations of his creativity and passion for woodworking.

Valerian possessed a warm and inviting personality that lit up any room. He was the cherished storyteller of his family, ensuring that memories and lessons were shared and preserved across generations. Not only did he treat his loving wife, Jean Podraza, like a queen throughout their 54 years of marriage, but he also exhibited a selfless spirit, often lending a hand to neighbors and family with tasks such as taking out the trash or making home repairs. His patience, kindness, and intelligence shone through in all aspects of his life.

Beyond his work, Valerian was known for his resourcefulness and creativity, often transforming what others deemed trash into treasured items. His resilience was evident as he overcame numerous physical hardships throughout his life. A lover of the outdoors, he remained active and engaged, passionately supporting the Nebraska Cornhuskers as an avid fan. His infectious smile and good-natured humor, which may have inspired countless "dad jokes," made him a beloved figure among family and friends.

In addition to his craftsmanship and love for storytelling, Valerian enjoyed various hobbies, including shooting pool, gardening, and playing Bobble Ball. He took great delight in teaching his grandchildren the intricacies of these games, leaving behind joyful memories that would be cherished for years.

Valerian's passing is mourned by his devoted wife, Jean Podraza; his children: Shawn Podraza and wife Daina of Lincoln, Nebraska; Shane Podraza and wife Mindy of Colorado; and Jill Podraza of Lincoln, Nebraska, Shannon Ward and husband Donald of Benton, Arkansas, and Shelby Podraza and wife Elizabeth of Joshua, Texas. He was proud of his grandchildren: Kazia, Teal, Genevieve Talin, Brady, Rily, and Ashley, along with several great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Valerian also leaves behind his siblings: Bridget, Bert, Jim, Geraldine and Jean, as well as special neighbors and friends, including the Mark Especito family, and a multitude of family and friends who cherished him deeply.

He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Dawn Podraza; his parents, Alex and Agnes (Kalinowski) Podraza; and his siblings, Lou, Stan, and Helen Ann.

Valerian John Podraza’s vibrant spirit, unwavering love, and dedication to family and friends will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be greatly missed but fondly remembered for the joy he brought into the world.
