Velma Moore

Velma Moore of Benton departed this world for a better life on November 21, 2008, eight days after her 99th birthday. She was born Velma Lorene Taylor in Lonoke County (Providence), Arkansas on November 13, 1909 to Samuel and Florence Mittie Bell Taylor. She had six brothers and sisters, all now deceased.
When her parents moved to Malvern, Velma gained fame as a basketball player for the Malvern Leopards. She loved to talk about how her quickness would allow her to "get under the arms of the taller forwards and score lots of points." She recalled that after one of the team's victories, she was carried off the court on the shoulders of her teammates.
Following high school, Velma graduated from the Draughn's School of Business in Little Rock. Because of her exceptional work skills as a typist and bookkeeper, she always had a good job throughout her working career. She was first married to Hiram Potts of Malvern who died at an early age. Later, she moved to Benton and married Jesse Moore, now deceased. Velma was a member of First Baptist Church of Benton for some 70 years, where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and was active in the Women's Missionary Society.
In 2006, Velma Moore was honored as Queen of the Benton Old Fashioned Day and was presented a plaque by the Mayor and the Benton Senior Activity Center.
Mrs. Moore has one daughter, Joyce Potts Faulkner of Little Rock who is married to Jim Faulkner. She has two grandchildren, Zan Davis of Little Rock and Amy Parker and her husband, Greg of Fayetteville. She also has three great-grandchildren, Anna Davis and Cate and Davis Parker. She has three step-grandchildren, Brianne Bush and husband, Brian, Lisa Breau and husband, Randy and Phil Faulkner and wife, Sue. Her step-great-grandchildren include Alex and Mackenzie Bush, Christopher Faulkner, Connor and Hannah Breau and Kristin Parker.
The family wishes to pay special tribute to her great friend and caregiver of many years, Carolyn Boone and her husband, Bill of Benton.
A graveside service for Mrs. Moore will be held at Lee Cemetery on Military Road in Benton at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 24, with Dr. David Pierce, music minister of First Baptist Church in Benton, officiating. The family would like to suggest that memorials be sent to the Senior Adults Center, 210 Jefferson, Benton, AR 72015; to the Sunshine Fund of the First Baptist Church of Benton, Attn.
