Listen to Obituary

Vernon Gene McClain of Little Rock passed away on February 2, 2026.

Vernon was born on July 12, 1950, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to James Bowman McClain and Zelma Lee McClain.

He was a graduate of Jacksonville High School and attended the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where he was a proud member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. There, he formed friendships that would last a lifetime.

Throughout his career, Vernon held several positions, but none defined him more than his time as manager of Sir Loin’s Inn Steakhouse in North Little Rock, where he dedicated many years of service. His commitment, leadership, and genuine care for people left a lasting impression on coworkers and patrons alike.

On July 17, 1988, Vernon married Marion Kaye McPherson. Together they built a loving family. He was a devoted husband and a proud stepfather to her two sons, whom he loved as his own.

Later in life, Vernon found great joy in gardening, cheering on the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Dallas Cowboys, and spending time with his family.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Virginia Harper; and his brother, James McClain.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Kaye McClain; stepson John McPherson (Blythe) of Rogers, Arkansas, and their children, Benjamin and Ethan; and stepson Chad McPherson (Amber) of Jacksonville, Florida, and their children, Quinn and Brynn. He is also survived by his sister, Sheryl Thornburg (Bob); his brother, Eddie McClain (Lana); and his nieces, Kelli Ellis (Scott), Kim Davis (Michael), Karen Johnson, Kristin Sharp (Todd), and Casey Grass.

A visitation and service will be held on Monday, February 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Smith Family Funeral Home, located at 1921 Main Street, North Little Rock, Arkansas 72114.
