Byron Jenkins Jr. passed away on April 6, 2026 at the age of 84 at the VA Hospital surrounded by the love of his family. Walter was born in November 1941 in Mobile, Alabama.
Walter grew up in the Little Rock area and graduated from Baptist High School, he then transitioned to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where he was a proud member of the Sigma Pi fraternity. During his time there, he formed friendships and embraced the values of brotherhood and camaraderie that stayed with him throughout his life. Following his time at the university, he answered a call to serve by joining the Air National Guard, where he dedicated 29 years of honorable service before retiring. His commitment to duty, discipline, and country was a source of great pride and a defining part of his life.
Walter built a strong and steady career, retiring after 16 years with Southwestern Bell. During those years, he faithfully served as a deacon at First Baptist Church in Sherwood, where his dedication to his faith and his church community was evident to all who knew him. Above all, Walter was devoted to his family. He and his beloved wife, Sabra, shared 63 years of marriage, a testament to their enduring love, commitment, and partnership.
Those who knew Walter will remember him as a quiet and steady man, yet one who could surprise those around him with a sharp and unexpected sense of humor. He found joy in the simple things, especially time spent on the golf course and moments shared with his beloved grandchildren, whom he loved dearly. His presence, steady nature, and occasional wit will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Byron Jenkins Sr. and Alice Miriam Barnett Jenkins.
Walter is survived by his wife, Sabra Jenkins; his daughters, Alice Sue Newton (John) and Dr. Becky Nowell (Britton); grandchildren, Abigail Nowell, Anders Nowell (Sophie), and Isaac Nowell; He will be remembered for his dedication to his country, his faith, and his family.
