Wanda Sue Byrd

Listen to Obituary

Wanda Sue (Huneycutt) Byrd was born August 14, 1932 in the Richwoods Community near Arkadelphia to Claude and Stella Huneycutt. Wanda graduated from Sparkman High School in 1950. She was the seventh child and youngest daughter in a family of fourteen children, which gave her the opportunity to help raise her seven younger brothers. They were a close knit farm family who all shared doing chores. She frequently referred to these duties since she was the only girl at home during those later years.

She moved to Little Rock and took a business course at Draughons Business School. While living there she met the love of her life, Herbie Byrd. They were married on March 21, 1959. His voice became well -known during a broadcast career which spanned 40 years, including coverage of governor Orval Faubus, Winthrop Rockefeller, Dale Bumpers, David Pryor, Bill Clinton and Frank White. He was the first broadcaster in Arkansas to originate live-broadcasts of news events from the scenes of the events.

Wanda Sue was employed by an insurance company and later a prominent doctor in Little Rock.

Those left to cherish her memory are one brother Wendell and his wife Iva Huneycutt, one sister in law, Reba Huneycutt, of Arkadelphia and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, her husband of 57 years Herbie, nine brothers, Herbert, Bert, Clovis, Marvin, Benny, David, James, Ted and Lloyd Ronald and three sisters, Virginia Leath Atkins, Nettie Daniell and Nancy Juanita Huneycutt.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity. Interment will be private.
