WG “Sonny” Brown, age 86, of Hockwold cum Wilton, England, formerly of Story, Arkansas, passed away on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at Saline Memorial Hospital in Benton, Arkansas. A decorated United States Air Force veteran, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and proud son of Arkansas, Sonny lived a life defined by service, dedication, and an unwavering love for his family.
Born December 23, 1939, to Weaver Green Brown and Cora Lee Qualls Brown, Sonny grew up in the small community of Story, Arkansas, where he attended and graduated from Mt. Ida High School. His roots in the Ouachita Mountains remained an important part of his identity throughout his life, no matter how far his travels took him.
Immediately following high school, Sonny answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force. What began as a young man's commitment to military service became a distinguished 26-year career, culminating in his retirement with the prestigious rank of Chief Master Sergeant, one of the highest enlisted ranks in the United States Air Force.
Throughout his military career, Sonny served at numerous installations in the United States and overseas, including Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, and RAF Mildenhall in England. A disabled Vietnam War veteran, he received numerous military decorations, commendations, and medals, including the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross and awards bearing Oak Leaf Clusters. His military achievements reflected a lifetime of dedication, leadership, and honorable service to his country.
While serving in the Air Force, Sonny also pursued his education, earning his bachelor's degree, demonstrating the determination and commitment to personal achievement that characterized his life.
Following his retirement from the military, Sonny and his family (Doris and Tara) settled in Plano, Texas, where he began a second career with Texas Instruments. After his daughter Tara graduated from high school, the family returned to England, where Sonny continued working in the school system and at an American Air Force base.
Sonny shared 25 years of marriage with his first wife, Doris Behan Brown, who preceded him in death in 1991. In 1994, he married Vera Footer, beginning another chapter of his life. Sonny and Vera shared 31 years of marriage, making their home in England, where he was affectionately known as “Willie” to his British family and friends.
Although England became his home, Arkansas never stopped being home in his heart. Sonny returned to Arkansas frequently for medical care and made a special effort to return each May for the Decoration gatherings. These annual visits were especially meaningful to him, providing opportunities to reconnect with lifelong friends, visit family, honor those who had gone before him, and celebrate the community where his story began.
Above all else, Sonny was a family man. His family was his world, and the love he held for his wife, children, grandchildren, and extended family was at the center of his life. His legacy is one of devotion to family, pride in his country, perseverance, and a deep appreciation for the people and places that shaped his remarkable journey.
Sonny is survived by his wife of 31 years, Vera Footer Brown, of Hockwold cum Wilton, United Kingdom; his daughter, Tara Elizabeth Brown, of Ipswich, United Kingdom; and his stepdaughter, Larena Kym Bartlett, of the United Kingdom.
He is also survived by his two granddaughters, Faren Elise Brown, of San Diego, California, who serves in the United States Navy, and Allura Elizabeth Brown, of Boise, Idaho; his step-granddaughters, Zoe Bartlett and Nicola Bartlett, of the United Kingdom; and his three step-great-grandchildren, Sophia Bartlett, James Bartlett, and Jack Bartlett, all of England.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Behan Brown of England, his parents, Weaver Green Brown and Cora Lee Qualls Brown, of Story, Arkansas. Also, his three adoring sisters, ElJean Brown Sandlin, Virginia Brown Kimes, and Audean Brown Faucett.
From the hills of Arkansas to military bases around the world, from his years in Texas to his home in England, Sonny's life was a journey of service, accomplishment, and love. He will be remembered for his distinguished military career, his enduring connection to his Arkansas roots, and, most importantly, his deep devotion to the family he cherished.
His service to his country was honorable, his love for his family immeasurable, and his legacy one that will live on through the generations.
