Listen to Obituary

William Richard “Bill” Axford, age 84, of Sherwood, Arkansas, passed away peacefully at home on June 21, 2026.

Bill was born on April 22, 1942, in Lakewood, Ohio, to Richard and Elizabeth “Betty” Axford. He married the love of his life, Bonnie Flower, in 1971, and together they shared nearly 55 years of marriage filled with love, devotion, and countless memories.

Bill began his career in sales before becoming the owner and operator of a service station. He later transitioned into retail management, where he spent many years. Throughout his career, he was known for his strong work ethic, entrepreneurial spirit, and his ability to connect with people.

His involvement in soccer began while supporting his daughter, Brittany, but the sport quickly became one of his own passions. As his interest grew, he helped bring international coaches to Arkansas to conduct youth training camps, co-owned Soccer USA, an indoor soccer facility, and was involved with the Arkansas A’s, a semi-professional men’s soccer club. He took great pride in being part of the early growth of soccer in Arkansas and the opportunities it created for young athletes and their families.

A proud Ohio native, Bill remained a lifelong fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer them on.

He is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie Axford; his daughter, Brittany Axford, and her husband, Eric Bonnes; his beloved grandson, Elijah Bonnes; his brother, Jimmy Axford, and sister-in-law, Scarlett; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Betty Axford, and his sister, Barbara Shelton.

Celebration of Life arrangements will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a local youth soccer organization or scholarship fund to help provide opportunities for young players, or to a cancer organization of the donor’s choice.

The family would like to thank everyone for the prayers, kindness, and support shown during this difficult time.
