Zofia Buratowski

Zofia was born on April 18, 1932, in Częstochowa, Poland. She was preceded in

death by her husband, Walter, in 2019, and her mother, Anna Perlakowska, in

1997.

Zofia was seven years old when Germany invaded Poland. She and her mother

were taken prisoners and forced to work on a prison farm. In 1945, American

soldiers liberated the farm, and Zofia and her mother were taken to a Dis-

placed Persons Camp inside the German border. There, a year later, Zofia met

Walter. They were married in 1947 and later immigrated to America, in 1949.

Zofia declared that she had arrived in “Paradise”, after what she had lived

through and experienced. Walter and Zofia’s names are listed on the Ellis Is-

land Immigrants Wall.

Zofia enjoyed cooking. She became known for her two specialties, homemade

bread and pierogies. She also taught herself and developed the skill of being a

seamstress, gathering a loyal customer base. In later years, arthritis prevented

her from continuing these passions.

Zofia was a devout Catholic and prayed daily to the Blessed Mother. She kept

a rosary in almost every room. We are comforted in the belief that she is now

in the presence of God and the Blessed Mother.

Zofia, 92, passed from this life on December 15, 2024, at Graystone Nursing

Home.

Rosary service and visitation will take place at Smith North Little Rock Funeral Home on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at 6pm. Funeral Mass will take place Friday, December 20, 2024, at 1:30pm at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
