Billie Haymes

Billie Jo Haymes, 89, of North Little Rock, Arkansas, passed away on December 31, 2020. She was born December 11, 1931, in Austin, Arkansas to John Arthur and Sallie (Sims) Haymes. She grew up in the Apple Hill community of rural Lonoke County and was in the last graduating class of Ward High School in 1950. For more than 75 years, she was a member of the Apple Hill General Baptist church, where she taught Sunday School for many years. Her professional career was a rarity for a woman from her generation. She was retired from both the Division Services for the Blind of the State of Arkansas and the Arkansas Employees Association. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women (BPW), and for many years traveled to functions all across the country through this organization. She was a past officer and devoted member of the Ward Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of the Arkansas Dietetics Licensing Board and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. As a sister, aunt and friend, few people touched as many lives through their unending thoughtfulness, unselfishness and immeasurable ability to care for others' needs far more than the needs of her own. She was a giver, not a taker and always found the good in people. Billie Jo is survived by sisters Fern Case of Clawson, Michigan; Virginia Hargis of Southgate, Michigan; and Faye Reimers of Austin, Arkansas; and brothers Sonny Haymes, of Gulf Shores, Alabama; Ray Haymes of Beebe, Arkansas; and Tony Haymes of Maynard, Arkansas; and a whole host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Ed Haymes, Truett Haymes and Tommy Haymes; and sisters Linnie Moran and Lorene Fisher. Visitation will be held from 6:00pm-8:00pm Tuesday, January 5th at Smith Westbrook Funeral Home in Beebe. A graveside service will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, January 6th at Apple Hill Cemetery. State of Arkansas COVID 19 directives: Face coverings required at all times, maintain social distancing. Arrangements by Smith-Westbrook Funeral Home. www.smithfamilycares.com
