July 7, 1948 — September 29, 2020

James "Jim" Weeks

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of James D. Weeks (Jim).  He died, Tuesday, September 29th at the age of 72, nine months after receiving the diagnosis of a glioblastoma.

He was born in Little Rock, July 7,1948.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Javus “Bill” Weeks and Marcella Weeks.  Memories will be cherished by his wife, Susan Turton Weeks and his sisters, Judi Akin (Randy) and Jeri McMullan (Mike).  He also leaves behind nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews both here and in the United Kingdom, all of whom he loved dearly.

Jim graduated Sylvan Hills High School and attended Harding College and UCA.  He served seven years in the Army reserves.  Most of his career was spent with AT&T where for many years he worked outside with installations, fiber optics and finally as an engineer. As a young man he loved sports and played football and baseball in high school.  He also became a pretty mean racket ball and hand ball player.  In his later years he turned his love to golf and worked hard trying to get that one shot straight down the fairway.

He had a keen interest in history and remembered fondly a walk thru and rendition of the Battle of Gettysburg narrated by his marine cousin, Colonel Joe Dowdy.  He also, again thanks to Joe Dowdy, observed closely the launch of Endeavor’s final voyage from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida to the International Space Station.

Travel was something Jim enjoyed.  Not necessarily the actual journey itself but certainly the destination.  He loved visiting with his family in the United Kingdom by virtue of his wife, Susan who is British.  They loved his southern charm and humor.

Jim was a gentle man, a man sometimes of few words, a man of depth and warmth. He was steeped in hospitality, tolerance, honesty and charm.  He was also a man of humor who knew hundreds of southern Colloquialisms and used them frequently much to the delight of his friends and family.  He was once asked by a friend from the “north” to write them all down so he could publish them but sadly Jim never managed to do this.  Jim was a true southern gentleman.  He will be missed so much by his wife, family and friends. Rest easy my sweet Jimbo.
