Jeannie Houser Taylor

Jeannie Houser Taylor died peacefully with her family by her side on Saturday evening, August 29, 2020 after a long and rewarding life.  Jeannie was born July 25, 1940 in Chillicothe, Ohio.  She received her nursing degree from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana.  Early in her career as a surgical nurse and nursing instructor, she met the love of her life, Dr. George DeLaughter Taylor, when he was a medical intern in Shreveport, Louisiana.  They married on September 3, 1964, and were married for 54 wonderful years.

Early in their marriage, Jeannie helped George in his solo medical practice in Sparkman, Arkansas.  They delivered babies, made house calls, and enjoyed life in a small town.  Jeannie grew up in cities, but quickly fell in love with George’s large family, spending time on the family farm and caring for their neighbors as the only doctor and nurse for many miles.

Jeannie loved being a mother to her three children, and later a grandmother.   She often said she fell in love with her children long before they were born, and she gave her whole heart to making a happy home for her family.  Those early years were filled with joy and laughter and spontaneous trips to “cities” for fun.  She loved spending time with her grandchildren and delighted in every detail of their lives, moving to Texas to be near them after she and George retired.  Her grandchildren often arrived to visit Gramma to find balloons tied to her mailbox.

Jeannie was a life-long learner and lover of knowledge.  She loved history and was a voracious reader.  She was quick to listen and help anyone in need.  Jeannie never met a stranger and was truly loved by all who knew her.  Warm and gracious always, she was an incredible cook and thoughtful hostess.

She was born to be a nurse and caregiver.  When her children were older, she again helped George in his medical practice in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.  She spent her later years taking trips to doctors seeking answers and treatments as George’s health began to fail.  When her own health declined, she worried more about her loved ones than herself.

Jeannie was preceded in death by her son John S. Taylor and her husband George.  Survivors include her daughter Jennifer Taylor Gunnin and her husband Mark; her son Benjamin E. Taylor; two grandchildren, Mary Grace Gunnin and John C. Gunnin.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to Tess Castle and the staff at Sunrise of Frisco for their love and care over the last several years.

A private family internment will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2020 in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.  In lieu of flowers and in honor of Jeannie, please smile at a stranger, offer kindness to a friend, enjoy a good book, and support the charities of your choice.
