Jerry Huie
Jerry Allen Huie, 81, of Little Rock, Arkansas passed away June 20, 2020. He was born November 24, 1938 in Clinton, Arkansas to the late Harry Chester and Edna Earl (Lyons) Huie.
In Jerry's early years, he worked as a gas station attendant and an ambulance driver. Following in his father's footsteps, he began a career as a Journeyman with Ironworker's Local 321 in 1967. He enjoyed that career until his retirement in 1991. He took great pride in contributing to the building of most of Little Rocks' "Skyscrapers". Jerry worked on the Simmons Tower, Bank of America Plaza, the Stephens Building and the I-430 Arkansas River bridge, among other projects around the state. It was not unusual for him to take his family downtown and regale them with stories about "walking the iron".
Jerry was skilled at any type of construction and welding. Although he only had an 8th grade education, he was adept at math and engineering. He built utility trailers at home on weekends and after work. In the spring of 1976, his welding skills were recommended to a gentleman who was travelling across the country with the Bicentennial Wagon Train. The man explained that he needed a trailer to haul hay for the wagon train horses. Jerry built that trailer in one weekend. The man was thankful for his work and invited Jerry to come down to the staging area to do repairs on several Conestoga wagons that had taken a beating on the path from Blaine, Washington to Little Rock. Jerry went on to weld frames on many of the wagons so that they could safely continue their path to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Jerry took his family to see the official "parade" through Little Rock, while pointing out all of the wagons that he had worked on.
Jerry moved to the Pinnacle Mountain area of west Little Rock in 1969. he built the house that his family lived in, as well as two workshops on the property. Construction of the house took two years, as he worked his normal full-time job all day and then worked on building the house on weekends and evenings. He always did his own vehicle repairs and enjoyed helping friends restore vintage automobiles.
Jerry enjoyed reading western novels (like Louis L'Amour), Western Cinema (John Wayne, Clint Eastwood) and travel. After his wife's death in 2006, he went with his daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren to the Tetons and Yellowstone National Park. Even though he was 68 years old, it was his first time flying in an airplane. He enjoyed seeing beautiful scenery and animals. For him, the highlight of the trip was a daytrip across the Continental Divide and into Montana. Throughout his life he also enjoyed trips to Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. No doubt, these areas reminded him of his love for the "Wild West".
Preceding Jerry in death are his wife, Joy Lynn Huie; parents; brother, Roger Lyons Huie; sister, step-sister Ethel; and special step-mother who raised him from the age of three, Sylvia Jones Huie.
He leaves behind his daughter, Stephanie Brass and husband Tim of Little Rock; grandchildren, Ashton Brass and Tristan Brass; sister, Judith Dare Huie Plumlee; step-sisters: Earlene, Shirley, and Elizabeh Jane "Janie"; along with other family members and friends who love Jerry and will miss him always.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 30, from 10:00-11:00 AM, at Smith-Benton Funeral Home, 322 N. Market Street, Benton, Arkansas. Funeral service, officiated by Bro. David Maynard, will follow at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Alexander, Arkansas.
State of Arkansas COVID-19 directives will be followed. Face coverings are required (not provided) and social distancing will be maintained.
