Mary Johnson

Mary Elizabeth Johnson, 93, of Little Rock passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 surrounded by her loving family.    She was born in Little Rock to Charles Dinsmore Davis and Ella Carter Davis on February 13, 1927.     She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, John Eugene Johnson, her son, John Charles Johnson, her two parents and her brother (William Davis).

Mar’ Lib (as her family and close friends called her) always had a twinkle in her eyes and was always full of love and laughter for her family and friends!!  She grew up in a loving family and traveled all over the state of AR when she was a little girl--visiting the state parks and enjoying nature.   She was known for her inability to sit still!   A neighbor once told her he would give her $5 if she would sit still for 5 minutes and she never got that $5!   She often told the story of a dare that she simply could not pass up!  She was 12 years old and a couple of boys dared her to jump from her roof to a neighbor’s...which she did...and broke her arm!

Mary Elizabeth graduated from Little Rock Central High School and received an Associates of Arts degree from Hendrix College in Conway, AR.  She worked several summers as a page at the Arkansas Capitol where her Dad was the Assistant State Treasurer and worked at the L. V. Martin insurance company after Hendrix College.  She met her future husband, Johnny, at a softball game when he was playing for the Immanuel Baptist Church (which she was a member of her entire life) team.  In addition to Johnny, she made many lasting friendships at Immanuel and truly loved her church and her friends so very much.    In fact her maternal grandfather, Elijah J. Carter and her uncle, Pete Carter were the general contractors who built the Immanuel church building at 1010 Bishop Street in Little Rock.  She was active in the WMU, vacation Bible school, training union and began teaching Sunday School when she was only 22.

Mary Elizabeth was also very active in the Little Rock school system….volunteering at Franklin Elementary in the PTA, as a room Mom and later worked as an audio visual coordinator at Pulaski Heights Jr. High as well as Parkview High School.

Mary Elizabeth loved her family and loved to laugh.  She was a devoted mother (to Debbie and John Charles) and grandmother (to Dallas, Austin Elizabeth, Carson and Madison).  She kept her family laughing with her quick wit and brightened their lives with her sweet yet spunky personality.  She was known by her grandchildren as their beloved An-Mommie and   no one made better homemade rolls than An-Mommie!   She enjoyed all the family vacations with her grandchildren and daughter including Canada, Alaska, Mexico, the UK, the Grand Canyon, Charleston and Savannah, San Francisco and Bermuda.  One of her favorite memories was riding on a moped with her grandson in Bermuda when she was 84 and falling off of it during a wide turn!  She made her daughter promise never to tell her friends “back home” as she walked up the hill with an injured arm.

In addition to her family, her faith and church, her home town and her friends, Mar’ Lib Loved the Razorbacks and kept track of every statistic there was about them!   She felt so very blessed to have had the life that she had, to have the love that so many showed her and to be able to love so many in return.  Her family would like to thank everyone who blessed her long and happy life.
