Mary White

Mary Ellen Finger White, loving mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother, 84, passed away on July 3, 2018. She was born in Little Rock, AR on December 29, 1933 to Bascom Felton and Hazel Finger.

Mary Ellen graduated from Little Rock High School in 1951 and was a member of the Beta Club and National Honor Society. She was offered a scholarship to Little Rock Junior College (now UALR), but decided to go straight to work.

She was a retired secretary having worked most recently in the medical field. She co-owned Frick's Drug Store in the 1960's and later worked at the old Missouri Pacific Hospital, St. Vincent Infirmary and Arkansas Children's Hospital.

Her first job was with Lewis and Norwood Insurance Company where she was remembered years later as holding the record for figuring the most correct premiums, typing policies with the fewest errors, and producing the most policies in shortest time. This was before calculators, when premiums were figured with pencil and paper and typed on manual typewriters.

Her father was an employee of Rock Island Railroad and she attained a love of railroading and the people associated with it throughout her life. While working for Lewis and Norwood, she was offered a position at the Rock Island as a secretary for the assistant Superintendent which she readily accepted. After deducting funds to help her parents with monthly expenses she was able to buy many as shoes she as wanted - her only luxury at the time.

She was a fourth generation member of Winfield United Methodist Church. When the congregation moved west, she chose to stay at the current location at 16th and Louisiana Streets, where it became Quapaw Quarter United Methodist Church. Over the years she was an active member, Sunday School Teacher and United Methodist Women.

She loved her God, family and country. It is very fitting that she passed from this life an hour before July 4th, her favorite holiday, free from pain and suffering with our Heavenly Father.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Jean Major and Jackie Hendrix and former husband and father of their children, Van Harold White.

She is survived by her children, Pam (Rickey) Mills, Jeanie White Wright, Van Harold (Hal) White, Jr (Tara); grandchildren Tony, Alicia, Erica, Sarah, Kathryn, Haleigh, Blaykleigh and Victoria; great-grandchildren, Riley, Reece, Sage, Landon and Cole (due in mid-August).

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 7th at Quapaw Quarter United Methodist Church with Pastor Keith Coker officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be Friday, July 6th from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Little Rock Funeral Home.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Arkansas Hospice, especially Cynthia, Christine, Sara and Ashton for taking such wonderful care of our mother during her last days on earth. Memorials may be made QQUMC, 1601 S. Louisiana Street, Little Rock, AR 72206
