Patsy Smurl

Patsy (Pat) M. Smurl of Benton, Arkansas was born in Sherrill, Arkansas, the daughter of the late Tellis and Roseada Rushing. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Bryant.   She enjoyed reading, music and friends and family.

Pat loved life and lived it to the fullest. She was a loyal wife, doting mother, and proud grandmother. She made each grandchild feel special in her own way with kind words of encouragement and frequent gifts.

She enjoyed reading; novels, mysteries or thrillers it didn’t matter, she frequently had a book in hand.  An excellent Pinochle player, she and Kent spent countless Friday nights at the kitchen table with another couple and more often than not she’d walk away with bragging rights for the next week.

Music was a big part of her life, her younger years spent listening to early rock and roll, Motown and country.  She was able to pass along a life-long love of music and a sizeable collection of 45-records to her children.  Later in life, Johnny Cash and Elvis were like long-lost friends bringing a smile to her face as she danced in her living room along with anyone who would join!

To her grandchildren, she was “Nana” always quick with a hug and kiss, a story, a great movie watching partner and the provider of cookies, cakes and bowls of ice cream.  She took her role as grandmother seriously. Using every opportunity to instill strong morals, character and Christian values in her family as well as any child in her presence.

Pat believed in staying busy; at home, at the office and at church.  Her children learned early not to say, “I’m bored”, knowing that would bring a quick response of, “Oh good, I’ve got just the thing for you to do!”.  She worked outside the home in the corporate offices of Dillard’s Department Store, retiring with over 20 years of service.

Pat passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 11th, 2020 in her home, surrounded by family, from complications of Dementia, at the age of 72.  A special thanks to the Saline Memorial Hospice, nurses and aids, whose dedication to the love and care of Pat was an immeasurable blessing to the family.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years Kent Smurl, her children Todd Smurl and Trina Smurl Williams (Fred); her grandchildren Jacob Williams, Carrington Smurl, Levi Williams, Graham Smurl, and Andrew Williams; her brothers Bill Rushing, Thomas Rushing, Tellis Rushing and Richard Rushing; her sisters Ruby Herring, Brenda Clemons, Ann Thom, and Connie Rushing-Mason and a host of extended family members, church family and friends.
